It lies in the northern part of the state in the state of the United States within the San Ramon Valley of the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The town was incorporated in 1982 and was named after early settler Daniel Inman, who operated a hotel and trading post in the area, and it developed from a rural agricultural community into a suburban residential town.
