It lies in the northern part of the state in the state of the United States along the Carquinez Strait in the northeastern portion of the San Francisco Bay Area. The city was incorporated in 1850 and was named after Francisca Benicia Carrillo de Vallejo, the wife of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, and it developed from an early California state capital settlement into a waterfront residential community.
