Jasper is a city located in Walker County, Alabama, the United States. It lies in northwestern Alabama, about 45 miles northwest of Birmingham and roughly 70 miles southeast of Tupelo, Mississippi. Jasper serves as the county seat of Walker County and is surrounded by forested hills, valleys, lakes, and former coal-mining areas. The city is located at approximately 33.831° North latitude and 87.278° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 13,278 residents. Jasper covers about 26.39 square miles, or 68.35 square kilometers. The city grew during the 19th century as coal mining and rail transportation expanded across Walker County. Its location in the Warrior Coal Field helped make mining an important part of the local economy and history. The Bankhead National Forest is nearby and offers hiking, camping, fishing, and scenic drives through the wooded hills of northwest Alabama. Walker County Lake is another popular local recreation area.
