Kirtland is a city located in Lake County, Ohio, the United States. It lies in northeastern Ohio, about 30 miles east of downtown Cleveland and roughly 10 miles south of Lake Erie. Kirtland is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area and is surrounded by wooded hills, farmland, residential neighborhoods, and small lakes. The city is located at approximately 41.628° North latitude and 81.362° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,858 residents. Kirtland covers about 16.76 square miles, or 43.41 square kilometers, making it one of the larger municipalities in Lake County by land area. The community is especially important for its role in early Latter Day Saint history. During the 1830s, Kirtland became an important center of the early movement and was home to several significant historic sites. The Kirtland Temple, now owned and maintained by Community of Christ, is one of the best-known landmarks in the city. Other historic properties include the Newel K. Whitney House and the Kirtland Historic District. Beyond its religious history, Kirtland is known for its parks, forests, and outdoor recreation.
