Lanett is a city located in Chambers County, Alabama, the United States. It lies in eastern Alabama along the Chattahoochee River, directly across from West Point, Georgia, about 30 miles northeast of Auburn and roughly 85 miles southeast of Atlanta. The city is located at approximately 32.870° North latitude and 85.190° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,456 residents, and Lanett covers about 6.00 square miles (15.54 sq km). The city's history is closely tied to textile manufacturing, with cotton mills helping drive its growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lanett was named for Lafayette Lanier and R. M. Lanett, who were associated with the area's early industrial development. The Chattahoochee River forms the eastern edge of the city and is an important geographic feature. Nearby West Point Lake offers boating, fishing, camping, and other outdoor activities. A unique feature of Lanett is its location directly beside the Alabama-Georgia border, with West Point just across the river.
