Monroeville is a city located in Monroe County, Alabama, the United States. It is situated in southwest Alabama, about 85 miles north of Mobile and about 80 miles west of Montgomery. Evergreen is roughly 30 miles east, while Atmore is about 45 miles southwest. Monroeville is positioned near 31.527° North latitude and 87.324° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,951 residents. The city covers about 13.82 square miles, or 35.79 square kilometers, of land. The Monroe County Courthouse is one of its most famous landmarks because of its connection to Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Monroeville is also associated with author Truman Capote, who spent part of his childhood in the community. A unique fact about the city is that it is widely known as the literary capital of Alabama because of its connection to two major American writers.
