Newark is a city located in New Castle County, Delaware, the United States. It lies in northern Delaware near the Maryland border, about 15 miles southwest of Wilmington and roughly 55 miles southwest of Philadelphia. Elkton, Maryland, is about 10 miles west, while Baltimore is around 60 miles southwest. Newark is positioned near 39.683° North latitude and 75.750° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 33,850 residents. The city covers about 9.43 square miles, or 24.42 square kilometers, including land and water. Main Street is a major local landmark and forms the center of the city's historic downtown and college-town district. The University of Delaware campus is closely connected to Newark's identity and economy. Newark was settled in the 18th century and incorporated in 1758.
