Newark is a city located in Licking County, Ohio, the United States. It lies in central Ohio, about 40 miles east of Columbus and roughly 30 miles southeast of Mount Vernon. Granville is about 8 miles west, while Zanesville is around 30 miles east. Newark is positioned near 40.058° North latitude and 82.401° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 49,934 residents. The city covers about 21.37 square miles, or 55.35 square kilometers, including land and water. Newark Earthworks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the city's most important landmarks. The extensive geometric earthworks were built by Indigenous peoples more than 2,000 years ago and include the Great Circle Earthworks and Octagon Earthworks. Newark was founded in 1802 and became the Licking County seat soon afterward. A unique fact about the city is that the Newark Earthworks are among the largest and most complex surviving earthwork sites in North America.
