Newcastle is a city located in King County, Washington, the United States. It lies on the Eastside of the Seattle metropolitan area, about 10 miles southeast of downtown Seattle and roughly 5 miles southeast of Bellevue. Renton is about 5 miles south, while Issaquah is around 10 miles east. Newcastle is positioned near 47.539° North latitude and 122.156° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 13,017 residents. The city covers about 4.40 square miles, or 11.40 square kilometers, including land and water. Newcastle's hills provide views toward Lake Washington, Seattle, and the Cascade Mountains. Newcastle Beach Park is one of the area's waterfront attractions, while the Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park provides nearby hiking and natural scenery. The community developed around coal mining during the 19th century, and remnants of that history remain visible in the surrounding landscape. Newcastle incorporated as a city in 1994. A unique fact about Newcastle is that it was once one of the most important coal-producing communities in the Pacific Northwest, with rail lines carrying coal to the Seattle waterfront.
