Pataskala is a city located in Licking County, Ohio, the United States. It lies in central Ohio, about 20 miles east of downtown Columbus and roughly 15 miles west of Newark. Reynoldsburg is around 10 miles southwest, while Johnstown is about 15 miles north. Pataskala is positioned near 40.010° North latitude and 82.675° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 15,809 residents. The city covers about 28.76 square miles, or 74.49 square kilometers. Pataskala developed from several small communities and grew as transportation routes connected the area with Columbus and other parts of central Ohio. The South Fork of the Licking River passes through the city and contributes to its natural landscape. Nearby Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve is known for wooded hills, sandstone cliffs, trails, and the historic route of the Ohio and Erie Canal. Pataskala was incorporated as a village in 1891 and became a city in 1996. A unique fact about the community is its name, which comes from a Native American word associated with the area.
