Salem is a city located in Columbiana County, Ohio, the United States. It lies in northeastern Ohio, about 20 miles southwest of Youngstown and roughly 55 miles southeast of Cleveland. Alliance is around 15 miles southwest, while East Liverpool is about 30 miles southeast. Salem is positioned near 40.900° North latitude and 80.856° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 11,915 residents. The city covers about 6.43 square miles, or 16.65 square kilometers. Salem was founded in 1806 and incorporated in 1830. The community developed as a center for farming, manufacturing, trade, and transportation, with the railroad later supporting industrial growth. Salem has a strong Quaker heritage, reflected in its early settlement and historic buildings.
