Southside is a city located in Etowah County, Alabama, the United States. It lies in northeastern Alabama on the southern side of the Coosa River, about 6 miles south of Gadsden and roughly 60 miles northeast of Birmingham. Rainbow City is across the river to the north, while Glencoe lies nearby to the east. Southside is located at approximately 33.9007° North latitude and 86.0237° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 9,426 residents. The city has about 19.27 square miles (49.91 square kilometers) of total area, including land and water. The Coosa River forms an important part of the northern landscape, and Neely Henry Lake provides nearby opportunities for boating, fishing, and wildlife observation. Southside Landing is a notable riverfront recreation area with boat access and outdoor facilities. The area was first settled around 1850 and was incorporated as a city in 1957. A unique feature of Southside is its location in the foothills of the southern Appalachian Mountains while also sitting directly along the Coosa River.
