Where is Streator Located?

Streator is a city located mainly in LaSalle County, with a small portion extending into Livingston County, Illinois, the United States. It lies in north-central Illinois along the Vermilion River, about 95 miles southwest of Chicago and roughly 25 miles southwest of Ottawa. Pontiac is about 20 miles southeast, while Peru and LaSalle are approximately 25 miles northwest. The city is located at 41.1209° North latitude and 88.8353° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 12,500 residents. Streator covers about 6.12 square miles, or approximately 15.85 square kilometers. The Vermilion River is an important geographic feature and has supported recreation and settlement in the area. Streator developed rapidly in the 19th century because of coal deposits, railroads, and manufacturing. The city later became known for glass production and other industries. Streatorland Historical Society preserves important parts of this local history. A unique feature of Streator is its location near the boundary between LaSalle and Livingston counties, with its development strongly shaped by the Vermilion River, coal mining, glassmaking, and major railroad connections.
