Vermilion is a city located in Erie County and Lorain County, Ohio, the United States. It sits on the southern shore of Lake Erie, about 35 miles west of Cleveland and approximately 15 miles east of Sandusky. Vermilion lies at about 41.421° North latitude and 82.365° West longitude. The city had 10,659 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 10.8 square miles, or 28.0 square kilometers. The Vermilion River meets Lake Erie near the city's historic harbor, making the waterfront an important part of the community's geography and identity. Vermilion was settled in the early 19th century and incorporated as a village in 1837 before becoming a city. The community grew through fishing, shipping, boatbuilding, and tourism. Vermilion Lighthouse and Main Street are among its best-known landmarks. Its location along U.S. Route 6 and near Interstate 90 provides convenient access to Cleveland, Sandusky, and other northern Ohio communities.
