Wapakoneta is a city located in Auglaize County, Ohio, the United States. It is in west-central Ohio, about 60 miles northwest of Columbus, 45 miles north of Dayton, and 25 miles southeast of Lima. Wapakoneta lies at approximately 40.567° North latitude and 84.193° West longitude. The city had 9,881 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 6.26 square miles, or 16.21 square kilometers. Wapakoneta was founded in the early 19th century and became the county seat of Auglaize County. The community developed near the Auglaize River and later grew as roads, canals, and railroads improved regional transportation. Wapakoneta's most famous connection is with astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was born in the city in 1930. The Armstrong Air & Space Museum honors his life and the history of space exploration. The city also has a historic downtown and nearby access to Grand Lake St. Marys. Interstate 75 provides a major north-south transportation route near Wapakoneta.
