York is a city located in York County, South Carolina, the United States. It is in the north-central part of the state, about 25 miles southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina, 30 miles north of Rock Hill, and approximately 35 miles northwest of Lancaster. York lies at approximately 34.995° North latitude and 81.242° West longitude. The city had 8,503 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 8.92 square miles, or 23.10 square kilometers. York was founded in 1785 and incorporated in 1841. It became the county seat of York County and developed as an agricultural and commercial center in the Carolina Piedmont. The city played a role in the American Revolutionary period, and its historic downtown contains buildings and landmarks reflecting its long history. York is sometimes called the “White Rose City,” a name connected to its early settlers and the English city of York. Today, the city has a mix of historic neighborhoods, local businesses, government offices, and community attractions.
