The city is situated in central Michigan along the Pine River, approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of Mount Pleasant, 45 miles (72 km) west of Saginaw, and about 75 miles (121 km) northwest of Lansing. Alma is located at 43.3789° North latitude and 84.6597° West longitude. According to the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 9,488. Alma covers approximately 5.01 square miles (12.98 sq km). The city is widely recognized as the home of Alma College and for hosting the annual Highland Festival and Games, one of Michigan's largest Scottish cultural events.
