Alpena is a city located in Alpena County, Michigan, the United States. The city lies along Thunder Bay on the western shore of Lake Huron in northeastern Michigan. It is approximately 65 miles (105 km) north of Tawas City, 70 miles (113 km) southeast of Cheboygan, and about 250 miles (402 km) north of Detroit. Alpena is located at 45.0617° North latitude and 83.4327° West longitude. According to the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 10,197. Alpena covers approximately 9.19 square miles (23.81 sq km). The city is widely recognized as the home of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where visitors can explore one of the nation's largest collections of historic shipwrecks.
