Clanton serves as the county seat of Chilton County and is located in an area known for peach orchards and other agricultural production. The city was incorporated in 1872 and was named after Confederate General James H. Clanton. Its location along Interstate 65 makes it an important stopping point between Birmingham and Montgomery.
