Darlington is a city located in Darlington County, South Carolina, the United States. It is the county seat of Darlington County and lies in the Pee Dee region of northeastern South Carolina. The city is about 60 miles northeast of Columbia, 15 miles west of Florence, and roughly 35 miles south of the North Carolina border. Darlington is located at approximately 34.2999° North latitude and 79.8762° West longitude. The city covers about 6.77 square miles (17.53 sq km) and had 6,332 residents in the 2020 Census. The surrounding landscape includes farmland, pine forests, and gently rolling coastal plain terrain. Darlington was settled in the 18th century and incorporated in 1835. The city developed as an agricultural and railroad center and became the county seat. Darlington is especially famous for Darlington Raceway, which opened in 1950 and became the first superspeedway to host a NASCAR race. The track is known for its distinctive egg-shaped layout and is often called "The Lady in Black." The city also has a historic downtown with preserved buildings and local landmarks.
