Demopolis is a city located in Marengo County, Alabama, the United States. It is the largest city in Marengo County and sits in western Alabama at the meeting point of the Tombigbee and Black Warrior rivers. Demopolis is about 90 miles west of Montgomery, 100 miles southwest of Birmingham, and roughly 75 miles north of Mobile. The city is located at approximately 32.5176° North latitude and 87.8361° West longitude. It covers about 17.04 square miles (44.13 sq km) and had 7,162 residents in the 2020 Census. The surrounding landscape includes forests, farmland, river wetlands, and rolling terrain. Demopolis was founded in 1817 by French Bonapartist settlers and incorporated in 1819. Its name comes from the Greek words meaning "people's city." The city's location on two major rivers helped it develop as an important trading and transportation center.
