Where is Dowagiac Located?
Dowagiac is a city located in Cass County, Michigan, the United States. It is in southwestern Michigan, about 25 miles southeast of Benton Harbor, 15 miles east of the Indiana border, and approximately 30 miles north of South Bend, Indiana. Dowagiac lies at about 41.98° North latitude and 86.11° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 5,721 residents. The city covers approximately 3.55 square miles (9.19 square kilometers), including about 3.45 square miles of land and 0.10 square miles of water. Dowagiac was incorporated as a village in 1853 and became a city in 1887. The community developed as a railroad and manufacturing center and became known for companies such as Round Oak Stove and the Dowagiac Manufacturing Company. Today, Dowagiac has a historic downtown and access to several nearby lakes and parks. The Dowagiac River passes through the area, while the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians has strong cultural and historical ties to the region.
