Ferndale is a city located in Whatcom County, Washington, the United States. It lies in the northwestern corner of Washington, about 9 miles northwest of Bellingham and roughly 8 miles south of the Canadian border. Ferndale is positioned at approximately 48.846° North latitude and 122.590° West longitude. The city covers about 7.47 square miles, or 19.35 square kilometers, of land. The 2020 Census recorded 14,480 residents, while the 2023 population estimate was about 15,000. Ferndale stands at an elevation of roughly 70 feet above sea level. The city developed around farming, timber, and transportation along the Nooksack River. Its location provides views of the Cascade Mountains to the east and easy access to the waterways and coastline of northwest Washington. Pioneer Park and the historic downtown area are important local landmarks. Ferndale is also close to Hovander Homestead Park, Lummi Bay, and the larger recreational attractions around Bellingham and Whatcom County. Interstate 5 runs directly through the city, providing a major north-south connection between Seattle and the Canadian border.
