The city sits along the Greenville-Laurens county line in the Upstate region, about 15 miles southeast of Greenville, 25 miles southwest of Spartanburg, and roughly 45 miles northwest of Columbia. Fountain Inn is positioned at approximately 34.689° North latitude and 82.196° West longitude. The city covers about 7.88 square miles, or 20.41 square kilometers, of land and water. The 2020 Census recorded 10,263 residents, while recent estimates place the population at about 11,000. Fountain Inn stands at an elevation of roughly 700 feet above sea level. The community developed in the late 19th century around the railroad and became an important local center for cotton, textiles, and agriculture.
