Georgetown is a city located in Georgetown County, South Carolina, the United States. It lies on the state's Atlantic coast along the Sampit River and Winyah Bay, about 60 miles north of Charleston and 35 miles south of Myrtle Beach. Georgetown is part of the South Carolina Lowcountry and serves as the county seat. The city is located at approximately 33.377° North latitude and 79.294° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 8,947 residents. Georgetown covers about 16.9 square miles, or 43.8 square kilometers, including land and water. Founded in 1729, it is one of South Carolina's oldest cities. The historic waterfront is one of its best-known attractions, with views of the Sampit River, historic buildings, restaurants, and local shops. Georgetown also has a strong rice-growing and maritime heritage that shaped the Lowcountry's history.
