Greenfield is a city located in Franklin County, Massachusetts, the United States. It lies in western Massachusetts along the Connecticut River, about 35 miles north of Springfield and roughly 45 miles northwest of Worcester. Greenfield is the county seat of Franklin County and is part of the broader Pioneer Valley region. The city is located at approximately 42.587° North latitude and 72.599° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 17,768 residents. Greenfield covers about 21.9 square miles, or 56.7 square kilometers, including land and water. The community was settled in the 18th century and incorporated as a town in 1753 before becoming a city in 1913. Its location along the Connecticut River helped support early farming, milling, manufacturing, and transportation. Today, Greenfield has a historic downtown and serves as a commercial, cultural, and governmental center for northern Franklin County.
