Harper Woods is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, the United States. It lies in southeastern Michigan along the eastern edge of Detroit, about 8 miles northeast of downtown Detroit and roughly 6 miles west of St. Clair Shores. Harper Woods is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is located near Lake St. Clair, although the city itself does not directly border the lake. The city is positioned at approximately 42.439° North latitude and 82.929° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 14,236 residents. Harper Woods covers about 2.55 square miles, or 6.60 square kilometers, and is almost entirely land. The community was incorporated as a city in 1951 after developing from a suburban area outside Detroit. Its location along major east-west transportation routes helped support residential growth during the 20th century. Harper Woods is surrounded by Detroit, Grosse Pointe Woods, and other communities in the eastern Detroit suburbs. Nearby attractions include the Detroit River, Belle Isle, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and Lake St. Clair Metropark.
