Hartsville is a city located in Darlington County, South Carolina, the United States. It lies in the Pee Dee region of northeastern South Carolina, about 20 miles north of Florence and roughly 60 miles east of Columbia. Hartsville is situated along Black Creek and is surrounded by the flat to gently rolling landscape of the coastal plain. The city is located at approximately 34.374° North latitude and 80.073° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 7,063 residents. Hartsville covers about 6.38 square miles, or 16.52 square kilometers, and is primarily land. The community was incorporated in 1891 and grew rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as railroads, textile manufacturing, and other industries expanded. The Sonoco Products Company has had a major historical connection to Hartsville and remains an important part of the city's industrial identity. Hartsville's historic downtown includes older commercial buildings and civic landmarks. Kalmia Gardens, located near the city center, is one of the area's best-known natural attractions and features gardens, trails, and historic grounds. Black Creek and nearby lakes and parks provide additional outdoor recreation.
