Hastings is a city located in Barry County, Michigan, the United States. It lies in southwest Michigan, about 30 miles southeast of Grand Rapids and roughly 25 miles southwest of Lansing. Hastings is the county seat of Barry County and sits along the Thornapple River in a region of rolling farmland, wooded areas, and inland lakes. The city is located at approximately 42.645° North latitude and 85.290° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 7,540 residents. Hastings covers about 5.13 square miles, or 13.29 square kilometers, and is primarily land. The community was founded in the 1830s and incorporated in 1855. Its location along the Thornapple River helped support early settlement, milling, and agriculture. Hastings later became an important county government and commercial center. The city's historic downtown includes the Barry County Courthouse and other preserved buildings that reflect its 19th-century development. Nearby recreation areas include Gun Lake, Thornapple River access points, and Yankee Springs Recreation Area. U.S. Highway 131 and Michigan highways 37, 43, and 50 provide road connections to Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, and other communities across western Michigan.
