Highland Park is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, the United States. It is about 4 miles north of downtown Detroit and roughly 2 miles west of Hamtramck. The city is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is surrounded largely by the city of Detroit. Highland Park is located at approximately 42.405° North latitude and 83.096° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 8,977 residents. The city covers about 2.97 square miles, or 7.69 square kilometers. Highland Park is well known for its role in the development of the American automobile industry. The Highland Park Ford Plant was an important early Ford manufacturing complex and became associated with the development of large-scale automobile assembly. The city also has historic neighborhoods and buildings dating from its industrial growth during the early 20th century. A unique feature of Highland Park is its location as an independent city almost completely surrounded by Detroit.
