Where is Ionia Located?
Ionia is a city located in Ionia County, Michigan, the United States. It lies in western Michigan, about 30 miles east of Grand Rapids and roughly 30 miles west of Lansing. Ionia serves as the county seat and sits along the Grand River in a landscape of farms, forests, and rolling countryside. The city is located at approximately 42.981° North latitude and 85.071° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,052 residents. Ionia covers about 5.48 square miles, or 14.19 square kilometers. The Grand River and nearby Flat River have played an important role in the area's development and provide opportunities for fishing, paddling, and outdoor recreation. The Michigan Reformatory, formerly known as the Michigan State Reformatory, is one of the city's most recognizable historic landmarks. Another major local event is the Ionia Free Fair, one of Michigan's oldest and largest county fairs. A unique feature of Ionia is its location roughly halfway between two major Michigan cities, Grand Rapids and Lansing. U.S. Route 131 and Interstate 96 provide convenient access to communities across western and central Michigan.
