Iron Mountain is a city located in Dickinson County, Michigan, the United States. It lies in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula, close to the Wisconsin border and about 85 miles southwest of Marquette. The city is roughly 25 miles north of Iron River and sits near the Menominee River and the Wisconsin community of Niagara. Iron Mountain is located at approximately 45.820° North latitude and 88.065° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 7,518 residents. The city covers about 8.01 square miles, or 20.75 square kilometers. Iron Mountain developed during the late 19th century as an important center of the Upper Peninsula iron-mining industry. Its mining history can still be seen at the nearby Menominee Iron Range and historic industrial sites. Pine Mountain is another well-known local landmark and is home to one of the largest ski jumps in North America. A unique feature of Iron Mountain is its location within a heavily forested part of the Upper Peninsula, where mining heritage and outdoor recreation are closely connected.
