Kingsford is a city located in Dickinson County, Michigan, the United States. It lies in Michigan's Upper Peninsula along the Menominee River, directly next to Iron Mountain and close to the Wisconsin state line. Kingsford is about 65 miles west of Escanaba and roughly 100 miles south of Marquette. The city is located at approximately 45.794° North latitude and 88.072° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 3,129 residents. Kingsford covers about 4.22 square miles, or 10.93 square kilometers. The community developed in the early 20th century as an industrial settlement connected to the Ford Motor Company and the region's abundant forests and mineral resources. Kingsford became especially known for wood-product manufacturing and charcoal production. The city was named after Edward G. Kingsford, an executive associated with Ford's Upper Peninsula operations. The Menominee River is one of the area's defining natural features and provides opportunities for fishing, paddling, and wildlife viewing. Nearby Fumee Lake Natural Area and other forests provide hiking, hunting, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling opportunities.
