Laurens is a city located in Laurens County, South Carolina, the United States. It lies in the Upstate region of South Carolina, about 30 miles east of Greenville and roughly 30 miles northwest of Newberry. The city is located at approximately 34.499° North latitude and 82.014° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 9,139 residents, and Laurens covers about 5.89 square miles (15.26 sq km). The community was established in the 18th century and named for Henry Laurens, a South Carolina planter, merchant, and president of the Continental Congress. Laurens became the county seat and developed as a center for agriculture, commerce, manufacturing, and transportation. Its historic downtown surrounds the Laurens County Courthouse and contains older commercial buildings that reflect the city's past. The city also has strong ties to the textile industry that shaped many Upstate communities during the 19th and 20th centuries.
