It lies in southeastern Michigan along the western shore of Lake Erie, about 40 miles southwest of Detroit and about 25 miles north of Toledo, Ohio. Monroe is also about 25 miles southeast of Ann Arbor. The city is positioned near 41.916° North latitude and 83.397° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 20,463 residents. Monroe covers about 10.18 square miles, or 26.37 square kilometers. The city has a long history tied to the Great Lakes, shipping, agriculture, and manufacturing. River Raisin National Battlefield Park is one of its best-known landmarks and commemorates an important battle of the War of 1812. A unique fact about Monroe is that it was established in 1817 and named after President James Monroe. The city also served as an important early settlement along the River Raisin.
