Montevallo is a city located in Shelby County, Alabama, the United States. It lies in central Alabama, about 30 miles south of Birmingham and about 10 miles north of Calera. Alabaster is roughly 12 miles northwest, while Pelham is about 17 miles north. Montevallo is positioned near 33.101° North latitude and 86.864° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 6,323 residents. The city covers about 10.34 square miles, or 26.78 square kilometers. The University of Montevallo is the city's best-known landmark and has been part of the community since 1896. Montevallo also sits near the historic Cahaba River corridor and several areas of central Alabama's wooded countryside. A unique fact about the city is that it was the site of Alabama's first women's college, which later became the University of Montevallo. The city's historic character and university campus remain important parts of its identity.
