River Rouge is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, the United States. It lies along the Detroit River and Rouge River in southeast Michigan, about 8 miles southwest of downtown Detroit and roughly 6 miles north of Dearborn. Ecorse is directly south, while Melvindale is about 4 miles west. River Rouge is positioned near 42.274° North latitude and 83.134° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 2,767 residents. The city covers about 3.20 square miles, or 8.29 square kilometers. River Rouge was incorporated as a village in 1899 and became a city in 1922. Its development was closely tied to the growth of Detroit's industrial economy, especially steel production, shipping, and automobile manufacturing. The city's location beside major waterways made it an important industrial and transportation center.
