Union is about 28 miles from Spartanburg, 50 miles from Greenville, and approximately 65 miles from Charlotte, North Carolina. The city had 8,174 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 7.98 square miles, or 20.67 square kilometers. Its population density was about 1,024 people per square mile in 2020. Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site is one of the area's best-known historic places. Union was incorporated in 1837 and grew as a regional center for agriculture, commerce, and textile manufacturing.
