It is in the South Carolina Lowcountry, about 50 miles west of Charleston, 35 miles south of Orangeburg, and roughly 55 miles northeast of Beaufort. Walterboro lies at approximately 32.904° North latitude and 80.666° West longitude. The city had 5,544 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 7.1 square miles, or 18.4 square kilometers. Walterboro was founded in 1783 and became the county seat of Colleton County in 1818. The city developed as a trading and agricultural center and later grew as transportation routes connected the Lowcountry with other parts of South Carolina.
