Wetumpka is a city located in Elmore County, Alabama, the United States. It is in central Alabama, about 15 miles northeast of Montgomery, 40 miles south of Birmingham, and approximately 80 miles southeast of Tuscaloosa. Wetumpka lies at approximately 32.544° North latitude and 86.211° West longitude. The city had 8,371 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 11.16 square miles, or 28.90 square kilometers. Wetumpka was incorporated in 1834 and became the county seat of Elmore County. The city grew along the Coosa River, which helped support transportation, trade, and industry. One of its most unusual geographic features is the Wetumpka Impact Crater, a large ancient impact structure formed when a meteorite struck the area millions of years ago. The crater landscape includes rocky hills and the Coosa River valley. Downtown Wetumpka contains historic buildings and landmarks that reflect the city's long history.
