It lies in southeastern Michigan between Bloomfield Hills and Royal Oak, about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of downtown Detroit, 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Pontiac, and 17 miles (27 km) northeast of Dearborn. Birmingham is located at 42.5467° North latitude and 83.2114° West longitude. According to the 2020 United States Census, the city had a population of 21,201. Birmingham covers approximately 4.80 square miles (12.43 sq km). The city is known for its walkable downtown, historic architecture, parks, and cultural attractions such as the Birmingham Museum and the historic Birmingham Theatre.
