Braintree is approximately 13 miles south of downtown Boston, 5 miles northwest of Weymouth, and about 8 miles north of Randolph. The town is located at approximately 42.2223° North latitude and 70.9996° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 39,143 residents. Braintree covers about 14.55 square miles, or 37.68 square kilometers, including approximately 13.80 square miles of land and 0.75 square miles of water. The town is near the Neponset River and has several historic sites connected with early Massachusetts settlement. Braintree was settled in the 17th century and incorporated in 1640.
