Council Bluffs was originally a major meeting point for Lewis and Clark during their 1804 expedition.
The city became an important hub for the Union Pacific Railroad during westward expansion.
It developed rapidly in the 19th century due to river trade along the Missouri River.
The name comes from early Native American councils held on nearby bluffs overlooking the river.
In the 1860s, it was selected as the eastern terminus of the First Transcontinental Railroad.
Today it is part of the Omaha metropolitan area and remains a key transportation hub.
