Methuen is a city located in Essex County, Massachusetts, the United States. It lies in northeastern Massachusetts near the New Hampshire state line, about 30 miles north of Boston and roughly 5 miles south of Lawrence. Methuen is located at approximately 42.726° North latitude and 71.190° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 53,059 residents, and the city covers about 23.1 square miles (59.8 sq km). Methuen was first settled in the 17th century and incorporated as a town in 1726 before becoming a city in 1917. The community developed along the Spicket River and was influenced by farming, mills, manufacturing, and its proximity to the Merrimack River Valley. The Spicket River remains an important natural feature and passes through several parks and historic areas.
