Ocean City is a city located in Cape May County, New Jersey, the United States. It lies on a barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean, about 15 miles south of Atlantic City and roughly 12 miles north of Sea Isle City. Somers Point is directly west across the bay, while Cape May is about 30 miles south. Ocean City is positioned near 39.2776° North latitude and 74.5746° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 11,150 residents, although the population grows significantly during the summer tourism season. The city covers about 11.56 square miles, including land and water. Ocean City was founded in 1879 by four Methodist ministers and was incorporated as a borough in 1884 before becoming a city in 1887. The community has long promoted itself as a family-oriented resort and has no commercial sale of alcoholic beverages. Its wide sandy beaches and historic boardwalk are among its best-known features.
