Sault Ste. Marie is a city located in Chippewa County, Michigan, the United States. It is at the eastern end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, on the southern bank of the St. Marys River. The city is about 50 miles from St. Ignace, 55 miles from Newberry, and roughly 290 miles from Marquette. Sault Ste. Marie is located at approximately 46.4953° North latitude and 84.3453° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 13,337 residents. The city covers about 20.16 square miles (52.21 square kilometers), including 14.77 square miles of land and 5.39 square miles of water. The Soo Locks are the city’s most famous landmark and allow large vessels to bypass the rapids of the St. Marys River. A unique fact about Sault Ste. Marie is that it is one of Michigan’s oldest European-established communities and sits directly across the international border from its Canadian namesake.
