Southbridge is a city located in Worcester County, Massachusetts, the United States. It lies in south-central Massachusetts in the Quinebaug River Valley, about 20 miles southwest of Worcester and roughly 60 miles west of Boston. Sturbridge is about 5 miles east, while Webster is approximately 10 miles southeast of Southbridge. The city is located at 42.0751° North latitude and 72.0334° West longitude. The 2020 Census recorded 17,740 residents. Southbridge covers about 20.9 square miles (54.1 square kilometers), including land and water. The Quinebaug River runs through the area and helped shape the city's early industrial development. Southbridge grew rapidly during the 19th century as textile mills and other industries expanded along the river. The city later became nationally known for its optical manufacturing industry. The Optical Heritage Museum preserves this part of Southbridge's history.
