It is on the South Shore, about 12 miles southeast of downtown Boston, 8 miles north of Hingham, and approximately 10 miles northeast of Braintree. Weymouth lies at approximately 42.218° North latitude and 70.939° West longitude. The town had 57,437 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 21.61 square miles, or 55.97 square kilometers. Weymouth was settled in 1622 and incorporated as a town in 1635, making it one of the oldest communities in Massachusetts. Its location along the Fore River and Back River helped shape its maritime, industrial, and transportation history.
