Ypsilanti is a city located in Washtenaw County, Michigan, the United States. It is in southeastern Michigan along the Huron River, about 10 miles east of Ann Arbor, 35 miles west of Detroit, and approximately 20 miles south of Pontiac. Ypsilanti lies at approximately 42.241° North latitude and 83.613° West longitude. The city had 20,506 residents in the 2020 Census and covers about 4.33 square miles, or 11.21 square kilometers. Ypsilanti was founded in 1823 and incorporated as a city in 1863. The community was named after Dimitrios Ypsilantis, a Greek military leader associated with the Greek War of Independence. Its location along the Huron River and major transportation routes helped the city develop as a center for milling, manufacturing, trade, and education. Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849 and remains one of the city's most important institutions. Ypsilanti also has a strong automotive history and was once home to major manufacturing operations connected with the Willow Run industrial complex.
