The city was established in the late nineteenth century following the arrival of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway and was named after S.H. Crowley, a railroad official. Crowley developed as a small agricultural settlement and later grew as a suburban community within the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area.
